En los adultos, la ptosis suele deberse al debilitamiento del tend\u00f3n muscular (aponeurosis), mientras que, en los ni\u00f1os, la causa es un desarrollo deficiente de las fibras musculares antes del nacimiento. La ptosis palpebral puede afectar a uno o ambos ojos; sin embargo, la mayor\u00eda de las veces, un p\u00e1rpado est\u00e1 m\u00e1s bajo que el otro.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00bfCu\u00e1les son los s\u00edntomas de la ptosis cong\u00e9nita del p\u00e1rpado?<\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">La ptosis cong\u00e9nita suele ser evidente desde el nacimiento. Los padres pueden notar que un ojo parece m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o y que el ni\u00f1o adopta una posici\u00f3n poco natural \u2013 extensi\u00f3n del cuello y levantamiento del ment\u00f3n &#8211; para permitir que la luz llegue a la pupila. Los ni\u00f1os muy peque\u00f1os no pueden expresar que tienen visi\u00f3n borrosa, pero los padres notan que el ni\u00f1o se frota el ojo ca\u00eddo. La ptosis puede ser m\u00e1s notable por la noche o cuando el ni\u00f1o est\u00e1 cansado. Si la ptosis se asocia con laxitud extrema de los tejidos del p\u00e1rpado, es necesario investigar si existe una condici\u00f3n llamada s\u00edndrome del p\u00e1rpado fl\u00e1cido (floppy eyelid syndrome). Esta pregunta es fundamental porque la ptosis cong\u00e9nita puede afectar permanentemente la visi\u00f3n de un ni\u00f1o. En t\u00e9rminos generales, la ptosis cong\u00e9nita debe abordarse si el p\u00e1rpado interfiere con el desarrollo visual del ni\u00f1o. Esto solo sucede cuando el p\u00e1rpado est\u00e1 tan ca\u00eddo que bloquea la pupila en todo momento. El p\u00e1rpado debe elevarse quir\u00fargicamente lo antes posible para permitir que la luz llegue a la retina y se desarrolle una visi\u00f3n normal; de lo contrario, el ni\u00f1o tendr\u00e1 un ojo vago (ambliop\u00eda). Si la ptosis es leve y no hay obstrucci\u00f3n de la pupila, el cirujano puede esperar hasta que el ni\u00f1o sea mayor (5 o 6 a\u00f1os) para considerar la cirug\u00eda.
