In cosmetic dermatology, laser technology is used to smooth out facial scars and significantly reduce wrinkles. Lasers can be used judiciously to induce collagen regeneration in the dermis. They can also restore skin elasticity and pliability. Many dermatologists and facial plastic surgeons use laser devices to treat skin damage related to sun exposure (sun spots) or aging. Lasers can also improve acne scars and keloids. It is not hard to see why lasers have gained such popularity among patients and physicians alike!<\/p>\n<h2>Lasers in facial plastic surgery<\/h2>\n<p>Plastic surgeons have quickly adopted laser technology in the operating room. CO2 lasers are the workhorse of many facial <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_self\"   href=\"\/en\/minimally-invasive-aesthetic-surgery\/\">plastic surgery<\/a> practices. This is the most common laser used by plastic surgeons. Laser skin resurfacing allows plastic surgeons to improve skin quality in ways never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>Lasers are also used to make skin incisions and stop oozing during an operation. Many surgeons have replaced scalpels with laser for certain operations. For example, some surgeons prefer to remove eye bags with laser and have stopped using stainless-steel blades. The advantages of laser are precision, speed, and efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2>Not everyone is a candidate!<\/h2>\n<p>Laser skin resurfacing, as well as other popular laser treatments, can provide excellent results in many patients, but they are not for everyone. People with dark skin, rosacea, or chronic skin conditions may not be good candidates. A laser resurfacing procedure may cause irreversible pigmentation of the skin (dark spots). This is a difficult problem to correct. Heavy smokers are also poor candidates for CO2 laser resurfacing, especially when performed with another surgical procedure, such as a facelift or <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_self\"   href=\"\/en\/blepharoplasty\/\">blepharoplasty<\/a>.
